How to install forge and shaders mod on Minecraft
So you want to make Minecraft actually look good. Smart. Whether you're setting up a mod-heavy survival world or just want those cinematic screenshots, getting Forge and shaders installed is the move. This guide walks you through the whole thing from scratch.
What you'll need before starting:
- Minecraft Java Edition (this doesn't work on Bedrock)
- Java installed on your PC (Download Java here)
- About 15 minutes
Step 1 — Download and Install Minecraft Forge
Forge is the backbone of Minecraft modding. It's a free, open-source modding API that lets you load and run mods for Minecraft Java Edition — the most widely used mod loader in the community.
👉 Download Forge at files.minecraftforge.net
The most widely used stable version right now is Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 (Recommended build: 47.4.10). If you're on a different version of Minecraft, select it from the list on the Forge site.
Once you're on the site:
- Select your Minecraft version from the left sidebar
- Click Installer under the Recommended build
- Wait through the ad timer and click Skip in the top right corner
- Run the downloaded
.jarfile - In the installer window, select Install Client and click OK
⚠️ If the .jar file opens in WinRAR or 7-Zip instead of running — download Jarfix and run it. This fixes the file association on Windows.
Once installed, open your Minecraft Launcher, go to the Installations tab, and you should see a new Forge profile ready to go. Hit Play on that profile to confirm it loads correctly before moving on.
Step 2 — Download OptiFine
OptiFine is what actually makes shaders work. It boosts FPS, adds shader support, customizable visuals, dynamic lighting, and a zoom key — and it's the backbone of most shader packs.
👉 Download OptiFine at optifine.net
Make sure you download the version that matches your Minecraft and Forge version. For 1.20.1, grab the latest HD Ultra build.
Step 3 — Install OptiFine as a Forge Mod
This is the part most guides skip over — you don't run the OptiFine installer separately when using Forge. Instead, you drop it directly into your mods folder.
- Open your Minecraft directory:
- Windows: Press
Win + R, type%appdata%\.minecraftand hit Enter - Mac: Open Finder → Go → Go to Folder →
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
- Windows: Press
- Open the mods folder (create it if it doesn't exist)
- Copy the OptiFine
.jarfile and paste it directly into the mods folder - Launch Minecraft using your Forge profile
OptiFine is now running as a Forge mod. You'll be able to confirm it's working by going to Options → Video Settings — you should see way more settings than vanilla Minecraft gives you.
Step 4 — Download a Shader Pack
Now for the fun part. Here are the best places to find shader packs safely:
- 🔗 CurseForge Shaders
- 🔗 Modrinth
- 🔗 Planet Minecraft
Recommended starter shaders (great performance to quality ratio):
- Complementary Reimagined — beautiful and well-optimized, great for most systems
- BSL Shaders — one of the most popular, very customizable
- Sildur's Vibrant Shaders — lighter on performance, great starting point
Download the shader pack as a .zip file. Do not extract it.
Step 5 — Install the Shader Pack
- Launch Minecraft with your Forge profile
- Go to Options → Video Settings → Shaders
- Click Shaders Folder in the bottom left corner of the screen
- Drop your downloaded shader
.zipfile into that folder - Go back to the Shaders menu, select your pack, and click Done
Your world should now look completely different. Welcome.
Troubleshooting
Game crashes on launch? Double-check that your mods match your Minecraft and Forge versions. A version mismatch is the most common cause.
Shaders option not showing up in Video Settings?
OptiFine isn't installed correctly. Make sure the .jar is in the /mods folder — not the main .minecraft directory.
Really low FPS with shaders? Start with a lighter pack like Sildur's Vibrant Lite. Shaders are GPU-heavy. You can also lower shader quality settings inside the Shaders menu itself.
Forge not appearing in the launcher? Try creating a new installation manually in the Minecraft Launcher under the Installations tab and selecting the Forge version from the dropdown.
That's the whole process. Once it's set up once, swapping shader packs takes about 30 seconds. Drop a comment below if you run into any issues and we'll help sort it out.
